01 / Artist statement

The mechanic behind the system.

Body Mechanic is not only a production alias. Mollison Folson’s work connects DJ culture, studio engineering, radio, independent labels, Detroit rap and ghettotech, techno production, and community broadcasting.

Folson began DJing in high school with longtime partner DJ Dee, working school functions, family gatherings, and local radio mixshows.

He later became an accredited studio engineer, earned a business degree from Henry Ford Community College, and hosted the Detroit Promo college-radio show for two years on WHFR 89.3 FM in Dearborn.

During the 1990s, Body Mechanic worked as a studio DJ with Kurtis Blow, Rap Mafia, and Papa J Smooth. That background expanded into techno, electro, ghettotech, rap, vocal records, bootlegs, and concept albums.

As a label executive and platform builder, Folson’s work also includes engineering sessions, promoting artists, releasing records, and maintaining spaces where Detroit music can circulate.

The Bassment extends the work into livestreams and archived DJ sets, giving the Detroit Techno Records community a recurring broadcast space beyond conventional releases.

05 / Label connection

Detroit
Techno
Records

Founded in 2009 by Mollison Folson and Derrick Lewis, Detroit Techno Records was built to release Detroit artists worldwide while keeping a raw street edge.

For Body Mechanic, the label is part of the same operating system as the studio, the booth, and the broadcast: a route for records and artists to move outward from Detroit.
